In 2004, the Neal Nursing Institute was developed as the first step toward Sarah Bush Lincoln becoming a Magnet Hospital with a goal of attracting the best nurses. The Institute centers on a professional nursing model that works to improve patient outcomes through nursing research. The end result is that nursing staff is extremely well equipped with the latest knowledge and best practices.

Burnham E. Neal was originally from Toledo, Illinois and built his business, Neal Tire, into a chain of tire stores located in three states. As his business and income grew, he dedicated himself to philanthropic activities. The Neal Nursing Institute began through a generous endowment by Neal and has continued for many years with the support of additional donors.

The Neal Nursing Institute funds can be requested by any Sarah Bush Lincoln nurse to be used for certification costs, re-certification costs, some conferences and research. Employees must fully participate in the training and share their learning with colleagues.  Employees must also remain employed at SBL for one year following the activity.
