Professional Development

“The nurse, in all roles and settings, advances the profession through research and scholarly inquiry, professional standards development, and the generation of both nursing and health policy.”

~ANA Code of ethics for nurses. (2015) Provision 7

At Sarah Bush Lincoln, we invest in our employees by supporting their professional development needs. We currently have a large number of SBL employees who are enrolled in nurse practitioner programs and are seeking practicum placements. Because we put the needs of our employees first, we regret that we must currently place external applicants on a wait list. Completed applications and an unofficial copy of your graduate transcript should be sent to Tracey McCord, Professional Development Coordinator, at TMcCord@sblhs.org.  We will update this site when that situation changes.

Opportunities for Our Nurses to Grow

At Sarah Bush Lincoln, we’re committed to encouraging and supporting the professional development of our nurses at all levels. Through Professional Nursing Governance, participation in organization committees, or participation in Performance Excellence projects, nurses at SBL can be an active member in driving nursing practice and professional development.

Nurses at SBL are encouraged to discuss opportunities to get involved with their nursing leaders and also have the option to meet with our Professional Development Coordinator for guidance in obtaining certifications, advanced degrees, obtaining their tuition reimbursement, and career mapping.

Professional Nursing Governance

Professional governance empowers professional, direct-care registered nurses to contribute collaboratively as decision makers regarding the nursing practice environment. The purpose of professional nursing governance at Sarah Bush Lincoln is to empower registered nurses to share in leadership by identifying concerns and driving decisions to improve professional practice, patient care, quality, and safety in order to strengthen our culture of excellence while providing trusted, compassionate care to all and promoting healthy communities.

Nursing Certification

SBL is proud of its many Certified Nurses. Nursing certification demonstrates subject matter expertise in an individual nurse’s area of practice. SBL supports and encourages its nurses to strive for certification achievement in their area of practice. We enjoy acknowledging our nurses once they reach this milestone, through the posting of credentialing information, celebration of their individual achievement and special name badge recognition. SBL honors these outstanding nurses annually with a special celebration on March 19th, National Certified Nurses Day.

New Graduate RN Residency Program

Sarah Bush Lincoln is proud to offer an evidence-based Registered Nurse Residency Program that has been designed to support the transition of new graduate nurses from novice nurse to competent nursing professional.

The program is one year, and consists of a variety of experiences designed to help the new nurse successfully transition from the academic setting to the hospital setting.

Continuing Nursing Education

As part of our commitment to nursing excellence, SBL offers high-quality continuing nursing education to all of our 500+ nurses. We are an approved provider of continuing nursing education (CNE) by the Ohio Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Our Continuing Nursing Education Provider Unit facilitates the delivery of a complete catalog of CNE. Many new offerings and repeated programs, are delivered annually to SBL nurses. From live classes to self-learning modules, from nursing grand rounds to interdisciplinary programming, nurses can choose from many learning opportunities designed to meet their learning needs. Computer-based learning includes offerings through HealthStream and Lippincott, covering a wide variety of clinical and professional nursing topics. SBL provides BLS, ACLS, and PALS training through HeartCode and the American Heart Association. SBL offers a Nursing Forum several times a year, which includes internal and external speakers and provides contact hours for attendees. Nurses new to clinical specialties attend courses designed to introduce them to essential knowledge in their area. As they move from novice to expert, multiple opportunities for education await them, many of which are offered throughout SBL.

Nursing Skills Lab

SBL is proud to provide a nursing skills lab, which contains a high-fidelity simulation mannequin in a hospital room with a full array of equipment available. Simulation provides an immersive learning experience with interactive training, adhering to the principles of adult learning theory. The program is supported by a clinical, situational and behavioral assessment that will create a roadmap for an individualized orientation and transition to practice.

Leadership Development

At SBL, we are committed to life-long learning. This commitment applies to all staff, including our leadership. All new, current & emerging leaders are the focus of an extensive leadership development program designed to enhance their effectiveness through building leadership skills in a variety of topics including: communication, coaching, managing change, critical thinking, time management and conflict management. Through a blended and experiential learning approach that utilizes Adult Learning principals, learners sharpen their leadership skills in addressing real life work issues in a safe setting.

New leaders will be oriented into their role by meeting with subject matter experts in key areas of the organization. Leaders will also be equipped with a collection of SBL resources and tools that will set them up for success. All leaders will be educated and held to the six SBL Leader Core Competencies throughout the organization and their work:

  • Service Champion
  • Values Compass
  • Coach
  • Communicator
  • Life-Long Learner
  • Steward
  • Safety Advocate
